Abstract
It is important to promote the oral health of industrial workers in modern industrialized countries. Dental caries has also been one the major oral disease in Korea. The purpose of this study was to obtain the baseline data and to develop the
preventive
measure of dental caries for the amelioration of the increasing oral health problem among male workers exposed to acids in Korea. The author examined 789 acid-exposed male workers selected by cluster sampling among 34 factories using acid, during
April
26-June 5, 1993. Dental caries status and treatment needs on dental caries were calculated by age group, years of employment and type of industry. Thereafter, the data collected was analyzed and discussed.
@ES The results obtained were as follows:
@EN 1. The percentage of Person affected by dental caries was 80.5%. and prevalence of dental caries was 63.0%.
2. DMFT index was 3.48, and Dt index was 1.60.
3. DFMT index was not increased, as age increased.
4. The percentage of person in need of the extraction of permanent teeth was 8.0%, and the average number of teeth to be extracted per person was 0.11.
5. Comparing with the national survey (urban, male, 35-44 years, 1991), there was an urgent need for the treatment of dental caries among the male workers exposed to acid.
6. It could not be found that occupational factors inflenced on DMFT index among the male workers exposed to acid.
7. To improve the oral health of the male workers exposed to acid, industry-based incremental dental care program should be legally implemented.
8. To modify the trends of dental caries among the workers exposed to acid water fluoridation program, school-based oral health program and home-based oral health program should be developed and executed on the national basis.
